2010 Calendar

July
UV Safety Month
To ensure your eyes are protected, wear sunglasses and a broad-rimmed hat. When selecting sunglasses, make sure they block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. But don't be deceived by color or cost. The ability to block UV light is not dependent on the darkness of the lens or the price tag. People of all ages are at risk for damage to their eyes from UV rays, including children. Remember to protect your children’s’ eyes also with sunglasses and a hat.
August
National Immunization Month
August is designated as National Immunization Month to spotlight the importance of keeping your immunizations up to date. As an adult you may be in need of some shots as well. Many of the immunizations that kids now take for granted, didn’t even exist when many of us were children. It’s worth checking out what is available and what you need. The diseases that these vaccines protect against are pretty nasty and better off avoided.
September
National Prostate and Ovarian Awareness Month
Each year, 7.6 million people die of cancer worldwide. To address this growing burden, the American Cancer Society has teamed up with other health organizations to focus on global cancer prevention.
October
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign held in October. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During NBCAM, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives.
November
American Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, blindness and amputations, and a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, and about 6 million of them are unaware of their disease. With obesity on the rise, millions more are at risk of developing diabetes.
December
12/5 through 12/11
National Handwashing Awareness Week
Handwashing is a simple solution to help reduce the density of virulent organisms in your environment, hence chance for spread. Remember 90% of ALL commonly touched surfaces are "contaminated" within 24 hours after an infectious agent is introduced into your home!
